West Sussex charity celebrates Rare Diseases Day and more than £100 million into vital medical research

The Horsham-based children's charity Action Medical Research is marking Rare Diseases Day (29 February) this year by celebrating investing more than £100 million into vital medical research over the past 60 years.

Thousands of families across the UK are coping with the challenge of caring for a child with a rare and devastating disease for which there is no cure. We know that medical research can save and change children’s lives. Yet surprisingly, medical research into conditions that devastate children’s lives is poorly funded.

Action Medical Research brings hope to these forgotten families by supporting research for genetic factors that cause distressing and disabling rare conditions.

Testing begins: pioneering study explores links between being born early and difficulties with maths

Around 160 schoolchildren from London and Leicestershire are taking part in a pioneering study, funded by Action Medical Research, to try to understand the links between being born very prematurely and struggling with mathematics.

Over 10,000 babies are born very prematurely (more than eight weeks early), each year in the UK. Sadly, many go on to develop learning disabilities. Difficulties with maths are especially common in these children. A maths disability can have far-reaching consequences throughout life and children can have special educational needs at school.

Action Medical Research celebrates contribution to the first polio vaccines

Children’s charity Action Medical Research was originally founded in 1952, by Duncan Guthrie, in his quest to find a cure for polio, a condition that blighted the lives of many thousands of children including his own daughter Janet (see Janet’s story below).

As reported in the media this week (20 Feb 2012), India has become the latest nation to rid itself of polio with no new cases being reported since January 2011.

Early research funded by the charity led to the development and rapid adoption of the first oral polio vaccine which eradicated new cases of the disease in the UK.

This initial success spurred the charity on to improve the quality of life for thousands of polio survivors left disabled or paralysed by the disease, as well as striving to prevent and treat other disabling conditions.

Since then the charity has developed an extraordinary track record in supporting some of the most significant medical breakthroughs in recent history – breakthroughs that have helped save thousands of children’s lives and changed many more.

She was part of the world record breaking women’s pursuit team before adding another win in the individual event and now has her sights set on adding the Olympic team pursuit title to her name (the individual event will not be contested at the summer Games). Join an Action Medical Research midnight walk with the PLOD

Teams of tenacious walkers are being sought to take part in overnight endurance events taking place in some of the UK's greatest walking regions. The PLOD series of events raises funds for children’s charity Action Medical Research with walks taking place this summer in a choice of seven stunning UK locations – on either the South Downs Way, Cotswold Way, Chiltern Way or Yorkshire’s Chalkland Way, or following sections of the Rutland Round, in England; the Trossachs hills in Scotland or in Northern Ireland's beautiful Mourne Mountains.

David Graham, PLODs organiser at Action Medical Research, says: "Whether you are a seasoned trail walker or just up for the experience of a big challenge for 2012 this is the event for you. Our PLODs are very popular, with many teams returning year after year to beat their previous best time. They are tough events but great fun for all involved and very rewarding."
